Today's Practice:

I have asked parents that are willing to be "base runners" at practice.

First Half of Practice:
Billy - hit batted balls from home plate around the field
Darren - help 3rd base/shortstop side of the field navigate what to do
Josh - help 1st base/second base side of field navigate what to do
Sam - help outfield navigate what to do

Goal: No dog piling each other, attempt some plays at first, guide some force outs at other bags and simulate their upcoming first game experience.

Second Half of Practice:
Have all kids in the dugout and go through a "line up"
Billy - pitching to them 3 balls or they hit off a tee
Sam - coaching first
Darren - coaching third
Josh - keeping them in order


General Rules

Concerning Outs
  • 3 outs clears the bases
    • Team hitting will continue to hit through “last batter”
    • If 3 outs are made, record the runs scored to that point
      • Any runs scored after 3 outs do not count towards official score
Last Batter Rule
  • They are to continue to run the bases and try to score until the play is dead
  • On defense, play is dead when the ball is returned to the middle of the field and time is called (or by touching home)
General Rules/Strategy
  • If a player hits the ball to the outfield, they can continue to run the bases until the ball is dead
  • On a ground ball to the infield:
    • If a bad throw to first takes place, please only advance 1 base
    • No multiple bases on bad throws to first
  • On balls stopped in the infield, attempt to make the appropriate play
    • Throw to first, tag runner, get appropriate force out
  • Attempt to place players in positions to avoid “dog piling”
Field Rules
  • There will be 2 lines drawn on the field
    • Line 1 is the line where the ball must pass for it to be considered a “fair and playable ball”
    • Line 2 will be further in the field and all defensive players must remain behind that line until the ball is hit
  • Calling time in the middle of the field or giving the ball to the coach that is pitching ends the play
Batting Rules
  • Each player gets 3 attempts to hit the pitch (feel free to give them a 4th if the 3rd is tipped)
  • Then they hit off the tee
    • Feel free to throw overhand to more advanced players if you wish
  • Teams will bat the same amount of players
    • If team A has 10 players and team B has 8 players
    • Then team B can bat 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1,2

On Offense:
Pitching to Kids: Billy
Coaching 3rd: Darren
Coaching 1st: Sam
Keeping Kids in line in the dugout: Josh
On Defense:
Directing Left Side Infield: Darren
Directing Right Side Infield: Josh
Directing Left Side Outfield: Sam
Directing Right Side Outfield: Billy

Team Strategy:

Since we will have winners and losers, I figured it's at least worth having some strategy.

Outs are going to be hard to come by... but killing the play as quickly as possible will be beneficial.

I think we place our bets on the majority of the balls going to the left side of the field.

If that's the case, maybe we can put Silas and Vincent on the left side of the infield with Tahj in like a "left center" and Judah on first.

That way maybe we have the potential for a play at first or getting a force out and hope Tahj gets to the balls in the outfield first.
